Put the “ART in PARTY!”

Hosting a kids’ paint birthday party is the perfect way to celebrate with colorful, hands-on fun. By setting up outdoor stations with washable paints, mini canvases, and child-sized aprons, you can easily keep messes at bay while letting your little ones unleash their creativity.

The Setup: An Outdoor Art Studio

Let’s be real—the thought of splattered paint everywhere is enough to make any parent second-guess an art theme! But that’s exactly why we hosted our party outside in the backyard and used disposable tablecloths.

Here is everything we set up for the ultimate painting experience:

  • Individual Easels & Canvases: We placed 8×10 stretched canvases on mini table-top easels for each guest.
  • Aprons & Palettes: Adorable, child-sized aprons and classic wooden paint palettes kept everyone looking (and feeling) like real little Picassos.
  • Paint Stations: We set out squeeze bottles of vibrant, washable acrylics so kids could mix and match colors as they pleased.
  • Large paint banner: Set this out for when the kiddos finish their palettes and want to keep painting!

The Masterpieces

It is amazing how quiet a bunch full of 5-year-olds can get when they are totally focused on their painting!

We had a few pre-planned ideas to help guide them, though we mostly let them just paint freely:

  • Tape Resist Initials: We used masking tape to put the first letter of each child’s name on their canvas before the party. Once they finished painting over the canvas and the paint dried, we peeled the tape off to reveal their custom initial.
  • Pre-drawn canvas: We used canvases that had printed pictures already drawn on or they could flip the canvas over and use the back to make.
  • Freestyle Masterpieces: We left a vase of colorful faux flowers in the middle of the table for inspiration, but gave them full reign to paint whatever their hearts desired.

Sweet Treats

After all that hard work, the kids definitely needed a sugar boost. I made a multitude of themed snacks and treats! This made eating its own fun activity all on its own!

Personalized paint birthday cake! You can make your own or easily buy a simple cake and just decorate the top. Used a mini easel to write the birthday girls name!

  • Paint brush Rice Krispie treats! I used vegan marshmallows that don’t have high fructose corn syrup! You can also add candy melt to the ends to make them looked dipped in paint!
  • Paint palette PB&J sandwiches are a huge hit and such a fun easy addition to the theme! I used Watkins dye free food coloring to make the spots and a pallets shaped cookie cutter to make the shape!
  • Rainbow fruit tray adds a beautiful treat for everyone to enjoy!

Party Favors

When it was time to head home, every little artist got to take their canvas home in a custom tote bag, along with a small watercolor pad and a new paintbrush! It was the perfect keepsake to remember a truly colorful day.
